Introduction

Mistress of the Underworld was inspired by a fascinating article which appeared in the journal Scientific American which describes research in Arizona by Howard Topoff on parasitism in colonies of ants.

The Formica queen ant invades and conquers a foreign population of ants and apparently succeeds in subjugating them to her. However, though the research is intended to establish an evolutionary trail, the article's final paragraph concedes the sheer perplexity in trying to reconcile social parasitism with Darwinism.

We invite you to read and enjoy our 1940's genre showcase article "Mistress of the Underworld".
